One Year After Collateral Murder Release, DOD’s Networks Are Still Glaring Security Problem

By: emptywheel Tuesday April 5, 2011 1:42 pm

As I have posted several times, the response to WikiLeaks has ignored one entity that bears some responsibility for the leaks: DOD’s IT. Back in 2008, someone introduced malware to DOD’s computer systems. In response, DOD announced it would no longer allow the use of removable media in DOD networks. Yet that is precisely how [...]

Obama Killed The Johnsen Nomination, Not Ben Nelson Nor The GOP

By: bmaz Saturday April 10, 2010 5:35 pm

It was not Ben Nelson who killed the nomination of Dawn Johnsen, nor was it Arlen Specter or Senate Republicans. No, the sole reason Dawn Johnsen is not leading the OLC is that Barack Obama and his coterie of advisors did not want Dawn Johnsen leading the OLC.

Happy Stimulus Day to Susan Collins, Who Killed Billions in School Funding

By: emptywheel Wednesday February 17, 2010 10:26 am

ThinkProgress has an absolutely devastating report on 111 Republican members of Congress who have attacked last year’s stimulus bill, but who have since taken credit for it. Click through for details on Republican hypocrisy close to you, but for a taste, here are the MI GOP stimulus hypocrites. Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) Signed A Letter [...]

Republicans Trashing Law Enforcement because It Polls Well

By: emptywheel Tuesday February 9, 2010 6:31 am

The best explanation for why, after having been briefed that underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was in FBI custody (and therefore, anyone who watches TV would know, mirandized), Republicans more recently started attacking the Obama Administration for having mirandized Abdulmutallab is this: Republicans discovered the renewed power of terrorism in last month’s special Senate election [...]

Susan Collins: I Stand With Crazy Pete the Twit-Leaker in Opposing Intelligence Whistleblowers

By: emptywheel Thursday February 12, 2009 9:47 am

Like her fellow Republican (and now famed Twit-leaker) Pete Hoekstra, Susan Collins doesn’t want our nation’s intelligence professionals to be able to report fraud and wrong-doing.

Why do Republicans work so hard to protect fraud and wrong-doing?

Senate Stimulus: Steal from the Poor to Give to the Affluent

By: emptywheel Wednesday February 11, 2009 4:09 am

ProPublica has done a comparison of the House and Senate stimulus packages which shows in stark fashion the degree to which the Senate bill steals from the poor to give to the affluent. The Senate bill gives more in tax cuts to the upper middle class–in the form of the AMT patch and the house flipping subsidy–than they give in all the programs targeted to the poor.

The Grassley-Isakson-Coburn-Collins-Bad Nelson Bill

By: emptywheel Sunday February 8, 2009 5:19 am

We really shouldn’t be calling the Senate stimulus bill the Collins-Nelson compromise bill. We ought to be calling it the Grassley-Isakson-Coburn-Collins-Bad Nelson bill, to memorialize where all the stupid comes from in the bill.

“Bipartisan”

By: emptywheel Saturday February 7, 2009 2:10 pm

If Susan Collins, Tom Coburn, and Chuck Grassley are largely responsible for the way the Senate compromise stimulus bill looks, then why are Republicans claiming it’s not a bipartisan bill/?

Wanted: An Ask for Phone Calls

By: emptywheel Saturday February 7, 2009 12:02 pm

When will Obama actually ask the millions of people on his email list to actually make calls to Congress?
