Monica Conyers Pleads Guilty

By: emptywheel Friday June 26, 2009 9:00 am

My biggest question for months was not whether or when Monica Conyers would accept a plea deal in a pay to play bribery scandal–as she did today. But whether or not her legal problems would make her husband, John Conyers, timid in his role as House Judiciary Chair. Monica Ann Conyers beginning on a date unknown and continuing until or about December 2007, did knowingly and voluntarily conspire and agree with

Rove Has a Date with HJC–He Just Doesn’t Want to Tell Fox News That

Karl Rove does too have a date with HJC.

If Harriet Can Appear Before HJC, Why Not Rove, Yet?

By: emptywheel Tuesday June 16, 2009 9:47 am

Three months ago HJC secured an agreement to have Karl Rove give a deposition to the Committee. But that hasn’t happened yet.

House Judiciary State Secrets Hearing Open Thread

By: emptywheel Thursday June 4, 2009 11:19 am

I’m a little late to the the House Judiciary State Secrets Hearing (committee stream here). Jerrold Nadler has had his opening statement–the big news in that was that Holder refused to make a witness available for this hearing. Jim Sensenbrenner is up noting that Obama has adopted Bush’s approach on State Secrets.

Conyers (et al) to Archivist: How Successful Were They at Destroying Evidence?

By: emptywheel Monday May 4, 2009 10:16 am

As John Conyers has suggested, if the Bush Administration destroyed Philip Zelikow’s dissent to Bradbury’s torture memo, it’s a violation of the Presidential Records Act, in addition to–potentially–evidence of criminal intent.

The HJC Agreement with Rove and Miers

By: emptywheel Thursday March 5, 2009 7:42 am

Here’s the written agreement between HJC and the Bush Administration for Rove and Miers’ testimony. Some highlights: The House Judiciary Committee (the “Committee”) will interview Karl Rove and Harriet Miers, but there will be no additional interviewees / witnesses (subject to the one exception [possibly Bill Kelley]). Breaking: Turdblossom and Harriet to Testify

I guess Karl Rove doesn’t look so tough now that he’s out of office. He and Harriet will soon give a deposition to the House Judiciary Committee.

Will the House Hold Rove in Contempt before March 4?

By: emptywheel Monday February 23, 2009 11:18 am

I can’t help but notice that Rove has blown off Congress just in time to be held in contempt before the Appeals Court gets Obama’s brief on the Miers/Bolten suit.

And Now the Appeals Court Jumps in the Fray

By: emptywheel Sunday February 22, 2009 6:08 am

Why won’t the Appeals Court let Obama try to broker a deal between Harriet Miers and the House Judiciary Committee?

Are Your Members of Congress Supporting an Investigation into Bush Crimes?

By: emptywheel Tuesday February 17, 2009 6:14 am

As many of you have noted, at least 62% of Americans support some investigation into Bush Administration crimes (whether a criminal investigation or a truth commission). Do your members of Congress agree with the majority of Americans who refuse to ignore the past? Call them and find out.
