DOJ Sits On Its Thumbs A Year After Macondo’s Mouth Of Hell Roared

By: bmaz Friday April 22, 2011 5:31 am

A year after Macondo the Mouth of Hell roared in the Gulf of Mexico, forever altering the ecology and lives of those who depend on the Gulf for their existence, it is business as usual for BP and a complicit Department of Justice.

Did BP Have Special Reason to Worry about the Iraq War for Oil?

By: emptywheel Tuesday April 19, 2011 11:39 am

The Independent reveals what we’ve always known: the Iraq War was about oil. Or rather, there were significant discussions in Fall 2002–the period when the US and UK were busy lying us into war–about who would get Iraq’s oil. (h/t Susie) The article describes BP’s judgment that Iraq was “the big oil prospect. BP is [...]

The Wishing Well: Is Macondo the Mouth of Hell Silenced?

By: bmaz Thursday July 15, 2010 4:19 pm

For the first time since Macondo, the Mouth Of Hell, first blew out in a fiery explosion on April 20, killing eleven men in the process, BP seems to have the well under control and there appears to be no hydrocarbons leaking into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Negotiation 101: How to Get Corporations to Do What You Want

By: emptywheel Monday June 21, 2010 10:16 am

I just got back from driving across the rust belt – Syracuse, Buffalo, Cleveland, Toledo, MI – and am catching up on all the interesting conversations you’ve been having this week while I was celebrating my mom’s birthday (thanks, once again, to bmaz for watching the liquor cabinet while I was gone). BP’s Well Failure Due to Effort to Save $10 Million?

By: emptywheel Monday June 14, 2010 12:01 pm

Henry Waxman just put up a letter and a whole bunch of backup documents in preparation for a hearing with Tony Hayward Thursday. In it, he lists 5 shortcuts BP used in the days before the well explosion, all of them with real risks. But BP chose them to save money and time. Well Design. [...]

BP Well Bore/Casing Integrity Issues and Senator Nelson’s Statements

By: bmaz Monday June 14, 2010 12:44 am

A week ago, Florida Senator Bill Nelson stated on MSNBC the BP Macondo well was substantially breached and there may be seepage and leakage from the well reservoir escaping through the surrounding sea floor. It appears Nelson was correct about the breach of well integrity and may well be right about seepage from the sea floor as well.

By: bmaz Thursday June 10, 2010 3:59 pm

BP and the US government have yet again been dishonest about the nature and size of the oil gusher leaking into the Gulf of Mexico water; it is over twice the highest estimates to date.

Congress Thinks BP Commission Needs Subpoena Power, Too

By: emptywheel Tuesday June 8, 2010 11:28 am

A bunch of hippie members of Congress noticed the same thing about Obama’s BP Commission that I noticed: it lacks subpoena power. U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), along with [...]
