Ah, I see now I think.

Then it could be that Chrysler needs to determine how and to whom it sells it itself before it even gets close to the DOE monies. If it stays as an USA firm, then good for it and the DOE monies becomes a positive to help it return to viability but if it winds up as a wholly owned subsidiary of a Chinese firm, they can fund their own damn green technology.

Works for me.

It was a bit of a rhetorical question.

Unlike GM, which described precisely what it’s doing with DOE money, Chrysler did not (Ford didn’t either but isn’t asking for immediate cash).

So my question is, yes, since DOE is only supposed to go to viable companies, why would Chrysler qualify?

But also, given that Chrysler’s busy trying to sell itself off, why should we give it that money? Where will it go? And if it goes to environmental build-up, and then Dongfeng buys it, what then? We would have effectively just given Dongfeng $6 billion in technology.

If Chrysler did go the Bankruptcy/Liquidation route, then they wouldn’t be receiving the $6B environmental loan would they? It seems to me that that loan only becomes operative, if they remain in business or are purchased as an entity.

Or are you asking what becomes of the loan if taken and Chrysler still winds up in liquidation? At which point it does seem as if the taxpayers would have taken another hit. But that would just be added on to the other costs associated with having to deal with a liquidated Chrysler: retirees, etc.

Or I might be an idiot.

Great post EW.

Actually, Chrysler did a great job walking through the point that has been made here about bankruptcy vs bailout and which is cheaper. I am surprised they did not walk through the national security aspect of bankruptcy but perhaps that point will be made by Ford or GM.

The point that Congress needs to walk away with here is that this is just Chrysler’s bankruptcy picture. Multiply by 2 (almost)and it gets worse.

I agree that Chrysler should have included some dialogue about a partnership/consolidation with one of the successful US based automotive hybrid design firms or US automotive companies. I’ve been wondering if a non-automotive US firm which does tons of supplying to the automotive industry might consider buying Chryler…like PPG.
