And Wasilla is 41.2 miles from Anchorage. You have to cross a bay to get there. So “exurb” may fit.

A happy find: This one site lists 12 coffee houses for this one town of 7000 people. Either the town is wealthier than Palin wants us to believe or everybody drinks espresso there, because at least three coffee houses have “Espresso” in their names.

OTOH, you have to question how elitist lattes are anymore if you can get one in Wasilla, Alaska, which is about to open its first Target. Coffee houses may be European, and (h/t Christian Lander speaking of tea) coffee itself may be colonialist, but they originated as middle-class public spaces in the 17th century. (Could the mass espresso drink habit have moved to Alaska from Seattle before it got to the rest of the country?)

The culture war aspect of the Palin candidacy IMHO is more about small towns than it is about class in terms of consumption habits. Palin is saying that she is involved in politics the way that people in small towns and other ordinary people get involved. Wasilla may not have so many people, but it isn’t 50 miles from anywhere the way an iconic small town is. It seems more like an exurb, but the people in exurbs think that they are living away from the corruption of the city. The real deceit is making this suburban environment stand in for a small town. The Democrats may not want to risk condescending to suburbs by pointing this out.

Terrible joke: if Palin has these European habits it is another hint that she knows about foreign policy.

This was something which McCain could have put in his speech, about how cozy Fannie and Freddie were with all members of government. Either he is implicated, it was too wonky, or it was about an issue and Rick Davis told him to forget it.

I hope Brady can come back this year. Boston.com has several reports that he has torn his ACL.

Palin, of course, believes in creationism, and I had a hard time putting a finger on why this is so frightening in a public official. It’s not the stupidity, it’s the authoritarianism. For them, it’s not about “believing” something so cockamamie, it’s about forcing others, particularly inquisitive, skeptical people to profess belief in something evidently false. It’s about grabbing some science teacher in East Anus, Oklahoma by the scruff of the neck and rubbing his nose in shit.

It’s also about the single trait that most marks the fundamentalist right: the end justifies the means. In the immediate sense it means the deceit of saying you just want to teach some tarted-up creationism called “intelligent design” alongside of evolution. But it ultimately extends to everything and is apparent in every facet of the way they govern. It’s a future of Palins and Goodlings shepherding us into a world of war and peonage.

The weekend was discouraging, and that was before the polling. The fix is in.
