A video snippet of Durbin’s questioning has shown up at ThinkProgress. Pretty depressing viewing even for someone with zero positive expectations out of this bunch.

My eldest daughter was on an internship with Ted Kennedy’s office during that period - she was taken out of the Senate office building twice, tested and treated. She’ll never forget that. As I recall, she described it as “like having a sharp spoon shoved up your nose into your brain and twizzled around”.

my general 2c’s on all of this… this is top down stuff with bush/cheney trying to turn an elected position into a position of kingdom.. with a king, everyone has to go along with the king or risk having their ‘head’ cut off… mukasey is operating under these terms and is happy to oblige the king… until someone goes after the elected person trying to turn a democracy into a kingdom - president, vice p etc, all of this is going to continue… needless to say ‘the king’ has surrounded himself with those who appease his nature, scott mcClellan having fallen off the wagon, but mukasey less likely to…

NEW VIDEO from today:
this is only two minutes — but it
does let us all know that AG mukasey will
simply be a water (torture) carrier for cheney,
for the last 194 days of this mal-administration.

Oh, I was typing away in the wrong place (last thread).

I missed so much, but I hope there will be YouTubes of several of those exchanges, especially Durbin’s very carefully constructed examination on treatment of detainees. Thank you, EW, for catching so much of it. I find Mukasey so hard to follow, even when he actually is answering. I guess that kind of fuzzing comes with the job, but man, it is painful to listen to.

And that is a man who keeps a portrait of George Orwell in his office? Does this mean that irony really is dead?

Was Mukasey crossing his fingers behind his back when he said he takes his responsibilities seriously? Um, the one thing we know for damn sure is that he is making it certain the laws of this nation do not apply to all equally….

I’m not sure if they were on Leahy’s staff (wouldn’t that have caused more of a media ruckus?) or postal workers. I tend to think it was postal workers. I know for sure some of them in D.C. did die, I don’t know if it was from handling Leahy’s mail or other mail.
